PENCIL Partnership with Hillwood High School
Mayor Karl Dean and Dr. Jesse Register, Director of Metro Schools, are working to improve graduation rates in Metro Nashville Public Schools. With alliances between High School Career Academies and area businesses, it is the hope that these rates, and other performance measures, will greatly improve. 2009 marked the year that HCA first partnered with Hillwood High School and its Health Sciences Academy toward its sustained success.
Among the many new initiatives for 2011-2012, HCA included Hillwood among its many agencies served on their Community Day. About 30 HCA volunteers worked side-by-side with 45 students and teachers in creating a recycled pop-bottle Greenhouse, revamping the school’s Outdoor Classroom, and landscaping throughout the school grounds. Hopefully, this will be the first of many opportunities for students and employees to connect and accomplish goals. Great job HCA employees and Hillwood High!
Centennial Medical Center is also stepping up to offer 8 Hillwood seniors internship positions from October through April. The interns will be observing doctors and nurses on the job and in real patient interactions while learning about their future careers. Many thanks go to Centennial for their willingness and creativity in making this happen!
